Recently, the International Cooperation Center Joint Council (ICC) and the United Nations System in China jointly celebrated the 79th United Nations Day and the 45th anniversary of the United Nations in China at the United Nations Compound in Beijing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in his opening remarks at the UN Summit of the Future in September this year that the world is going through a period of upheaval and transition, and a decisive first step must be taken to renew and reform international cooperation. He called on the Summit to consider deep reforms to make global institutions more legitimate, equitable and effective, based on the values of the UN Charter. This event, which aims to implement the outcomes of the UN Summit of the Future and focus on the grand theme of "For Our Common Future", reflects the extraordinary significance of collective action in the face of global challenges.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered an online speech

The event featured an online speech from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of the 79th UN Day. Mr. Guterres said "in this September, the UN Summit of the Future adopted the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. These landmark agreements will ensure that the UN system adapts, reforms, and revitalizes, which can adapt to the changes and challenges surround us and deliver solutions for all. To realize hope requires all nations to work together, and to realize hope requires the United Nations. On United Nations Day, I call on all nations to keep this beacon of the world and its ideals alive."

UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee delivered a speech on behalf of the UN system in China 

Representatives of the representative offices of the United Nations system in China took the stage to greet. In his speech, Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China, highlighted the changes and remarkable achievements of China's economic and social development in the past 45 years of the UN's presence in China, as well as the challenges posed by the increasingly severe global situation to the Sustainable Development Goals. He called on all parties to implement the Compact for the Future adopted at the UN Future Summit in September this year, while accelerating the process of realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China said in his speech: "To address these challenges, more efforts are still needed, and real opportunities for international cooperation and multilateralism need to be provided. We must take an interconnected and inclusive approach, bringing together global expertise to come up with solutions adapted to the realities of the 21st century. We will work with China to build on the UN Cooperation Framework for Sustainable Development in China (2021-2025) and plan a new cooperation framework for 2026-2030 to help China implement its new five-year development plan."

In his speech, Mr. Miao Deyu congratulated the 79th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, saying that the United Nations is the core platform for practicing multilateralism and promoting global governance. China firmly supports the central role of the United Nations in international affairs, deeply participates in important processes such as the Summit of the Future, contributes to the development and revitalization of the Global South, and promotes world modernization with concrete actions. Mr. Miao Deyu pointed out that the UN development system has made important contributions to China's development in the past 45 years. It is hoped that the UN development system in China will continue to align with China's development priorities and make new contributions to China's high-quality development and modernization drive, the Belt and Road Initiative and the global development Initiative.

Chinese and foreign government representatives, diplomats special guests attended the event

More than 170 high-level Chinese and foreign guests attended the UN compound on the day, including the UN Resident Coordinator in China, representatives of the Chinese government and UN agencies in China. Near 100 ambassadors and senior diplomats, as well as heads of international organizations in China and representatives of the United Nations System of Partnerships in China attended the event. The United Nations system in China aims to take this event as an opportunity to enhance its contacts and cooperation with the Chinese government and various sectors in China and abroad.
