On 20 January 2026 (local time), Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with Mu Dong, Special Envoy of the International Cooperation Center (ICC) and Special Representative of Asia-Pacific Affairs of the ICC, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Lula stated that Brazil is willing to deepen strategic cooperation with China and expressed his hope to visit China again during his term in office. The two sides exchanged views on enhancing high-level interactions between the two countries, strengthening strategic communication and coordination, as well as on international and regional issues of common concern. Paulo Pimenta, Member of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies and former Minister of the Brazilian Presidency, and other officials attended the meeting.
At afternoon of the same day, Mu Dong, together with President Lula and Paulo Pimenta, attended an event of Petrobras in Rio Grande do Sul. Mu Dong has visited Brazil on multiple occasions. During his most recent visit to Brazil in June 2025, he delivered a written note from the ICC to Geraldo Alckmin, Vice President of Brazil. On this basis, the United Nations in China, the Embassy of Brazil to China and the ICC successfully co-hosted a preparatory meeting for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) at the compound of the United Nations in China in September 2025. The meeting was attended by senior government officials, diplomatic envoys, heads of UN agencies in China and scholar representatives from more than 50 countries and regions.
