As Brazil's largest port and the top comprehensive port in Latin America, the Port of Santos traces its history back to 1532. Officially inaugurated on February 2, 1892, it became Brazil's first modern port. Situated on the northeastern side of São Vicente Island in the city of Santos, State of São Paulo, in Brazil's southeastern economic heartland, the port lies approximately 60 kilometres northwest of the city of São Paulo. Serving as a pivotal trade hub for Brazil and Latin America, it handles around one-third of Brazil's total cargo throughput, accounting for 40% of the country's container volume and 50% of its cargo transshipment volume. In 2025, the port registered a record-high cargo throughput of 186.4 million metric tons and a container throughput of 5.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). China stands as the Port of Santos' largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume making up roughly 30% of the port's total trade volume.
