From the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to Building a Community with a shared Future for Mankind - Promoting a New Type of International Relations featuring win-win Cooperation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Opening of the General Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly (September 19, 2023)

70 years ago, in order to develop good-neighborly and friendly relations with neighboring countries, China put forward and advocated the five principles of "mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence". Over the past 70 years, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence have not only guided China's diplomatic practice and provided normative support for China to establish friendly and cooperative relations with other countries in the world, but have also been widely recognized by the international community and accepted by most countries. The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence have withstood the baptism of times and the test of the international situation, and their spirit is timeless. They resonate with the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind and the Three Global Initiatives, demonstrating their current significance and value of times.

The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence are public goods of extraordinary significance provided by China to the international community. They vividly reflect the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, open the historical process of safeguarding national independence and sovereignty of developing countries and establishing a new type of international relations, and respond to the call of people around the world for peace, development and cooperation. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence have not only become the cornerstone of China's foreign policy, but also become basic norms governing international relations and basic principles of international law, contributing wisdom to the correct handling of state-to-state relations. China has steadfastly developed friendly cooperation with all countries and regions in the world on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, promoted the building of a new type of international relations, and contributed to safeguarding world peace and promoting common development.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the first year of the second decade of building a community with a shared future for mankind. With the support of the Chinese Government, the Joint Council of the International Cooperation Center will continue to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations system, work with the international community to inherit and promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, and build international consensus. We need to jointly meet global challenges, give play to the coordinating role of the United Nations in international affairs and actively advocate an equal and orderly multi-polar world and economic globalization that benefits all. We shall promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind to write a new chapter of peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and make more contributions to a brighter future of peace, security, prosperity and progress in the world.
